Description:
Master the fundamental skills of photography. Learn to use a film camera, develop and print in the darkroom, and become skilled in the use of depth of field, shutter speed and exposure. The focus of this course is to gain a basic understanding of black and white photography and a proficiency in camera and darkroom skills. The course will cover basic camera operation and darkroom procedures, as well as composition and personal expression, with an introduction to history and philosophy in fine art photography.

Through hands-on demonstrations we will cover darkroom procedures, film exposure and development, and basic printing techniques. During class there will be lectures, slide shows, and print evaluations, as well as group discussions and darkroom time. Students will have opportunity in class to print in the darkroom with the guidance of the instructor. Each week, students will create new photographs, develop their own film, and print photographs using techniques discussed in class.

*There will be one additional class meeting / printing day on Saturday, July 20.

Students should be prepared to spend a minimum of 10-15 hours a week on assignments for this course, including use of the Photo Center darkroom for processing and printing.

Rental fees (not included in tuition) are charged for use of the Photo Center darkroom to complete assignments outside of class; a list of rental rates for students is available on the Hours/Rates page.
