The Digital Image Organization and Management class focuses on the fundamental principles and systems you can use to store, manage, organize, and find your digital assets (video and still). A proper asset management implementation helps a photographer be able to find, sort, label, and share work quickly. This traditionally was done with a series of folders stored on a computer. Software programs such as Lightroom, Capture One, Luminair, and others have all made it easier to develop a system; however, most photographers still struggle with staying on top of all this organization. To make things even more complicated, questions about hard drives, storage solutions, cloud storage, software packages, and backup solutions only add to the complexity.
This class will examine the foundations for creating and implementing an organization method and workflow that will work for you. Rather than trying to force a single solution, the course will focus on a variety of tools and techniques to help you make a system that works for you. By the end of the course, you will have an understanding of a consistent, well-organized, and backed-up solution that will make your photography faster, easier, and more enjoyable. You don't need to be using Adobe software for this class. We will talk about several options for staying organized regardless of the program AND talk about how to migrate from one program to another if you are thinking about moving in a new direction.
- The course will be held in the PCNW Mac lab, but instructions will be provided for both Mac and PC. Students may use their own laptops if they prefer.
- Students should expect to spend several hours per week on assignments for this course, which may require use of PCNW facilities; view our Rental Rates for details about additional fees.
- Additional information about course expectations and required materials will be provided by the instructor at the start of the quarter.
- Interested in going from digital image organization to editing? Enroll in Lightroom Editing & Beyond to create a course series this spring.
