There is something magical about night photography. It doesn't matter if you photograph the deep starry night sky or a cityscape. The deep shadows, shifting colors, and long exposures create dramatic, otherworldly images. In this two-credit class, you will focus on the magic of photographing at night and learning how to process and edit your images.
The course consists of two field trips and four classroom sessions. The first field trip focuses on night cityscape photography. The second field trip focuses more on astrophotography/night sky photography. Both locations will be easy access from Seattle, and carpooling will be encouraged.
The classroom sessions will cover technical and non-technical considerations when approaching night photography including safety in the field, camera settings, equipment and honing your vision and style for night work. We will also focus on a variety of processing methods and techniques using Lightroom, Photoshop, and third-party software, considerations for displaying images, and surveying various historical and modern night photographers. Students may work in color or black and white using digital or film. Students using film will need to have scans of their images for digital processing.
