DESCRIPTION
Portraiture in photography is more vital and potent than ever. It has also become a highly charged photographic subject matter as we continue to understand and at times question, the roles of photographer and subject. In this course, students will be encouraged to consider the historical evolution of photographic portraiture and how cultural and creative forces have helped to expand the potential directions for portraiture. What can we learn from looking at a portrait? What remains hidden? How are contemporary photographic artists engaging with and at times subverting the portrait? Through course presentations, class assignments, and group discussions, students will create new personal work that reflects their own expanded understanding of portraiture in photography.
