Hands on demonstrations address darkroom procedures, film exposure and development, and basic printing techniques. During class there are lectures, slide shows, and critiques\/print evaluations, as well as group darkroom time with opportunity for students to print with the instructor's supervision. Critiques are an important aspect of photographic education and class critiques are intended to acquaint students with the language of photography and the basic critical skills for conceptualizing, creating, viewing and discussing photographic images. Throughout the quarter, students will be encouraged to investigate the self through a series of photographic exercises that center the body through gestures, clothing, props, and the environment. Each photographic prompt calls for a willingness to explore personal experiences in the world and will culminate in biweekly discussions of work. In addition to photographic exercises, students will be provided with readings that concentrate on various techniques of performance artists, topics around representation and body language, leading up to inquiries around what informs our notion of self. In this class, we will think about how photographs, objects, family records, institutional collections, and lived memory continue to move through time. Together, we will consider how artists transform historical material into work that speaks to absence, inheritance, survival, and the complicated ways images shape what we know and remember. Alongside photographic inquiry, the course will consider Indigenous approaches to storytelling and visual sovereignty that challenge singular or institutional narratives. This course is ideal for photographers who have an archive they want to explore, as well as those curious about how archival research and historical materials can inform contemporary photographic practice.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThrough lectures, readings, short exercises, and group critiques, students will look at artists who work with archives to question official histories, untold narratives, museum display, family memory, and cultural inheritance.
