ABOUT THE WORK
(This piece is one of four from John that is currently being exhibited in the PCNW gallery as part of our 27th juried exhibition, Visual Narratives. On view until December 14, 2025.)
I have a long term project called "Sagebrush Stories," for which I have photographed the landscapes of the American west. I look not for pristine landscapes, but rather for signs of human endeavor and ambition, success and failure, the evidence of history, and the ways that we have converted space into place.
Many landscapes become visual metaphors for the romance of the West, with its boundless space, unlimited freedom and endless resources and opportunity. The wide and clear horizon, punctuated by human stuff, is consistent with many of these values, and appears frequently in my photographs.
