Large Format Film - Spring 2023

DESCRIPTION
In this course students will learn the unique process of working with the large format camera and the unique advantages it holds. What happens when you slow down and take more time to compose, focus, and make your exposure. Through instructor-led demonstrations, we will discuss and review the functionality of large format cameras, the potential of camera movements and their impact on composition, and how to properly develop large format black and white film. Class discussions will focus on how various renowned photographers have utilized the large format camera in their individual practice. Through class assignments and group field-based outings, students will work towards the development of their own skill and mastery of the large format camera. A limited number of large format cameras will be available for student use..

NOTES

• PCNW will have a select number of 4x5 large format cameras available for student use throughout the quarter (rental is free to current students). If you have your own large format camera, you are welcome and encouraged to use it.
• Students should expect to spend several hours per week on assignments for this course, which will require use of PCNW facilities; view our Rental Rates for details about additional fees.
• The Materials Fee for the course includes film and other materials/equipment used for in-class demonstrations. Students will be required to purchase additional materials, such as film and paper, for completing assignments outside of class.
• Additional information about course expectations and required materials will be provided by the instructor at the start of the quarter.
