Feminism cannot be classified as a stylist genre of photography, like landscape or portraiture, nor is it simply art by those that identify as women; it expresses criticism of structural and ideological inequalities with regard to gender, sexuality, race, class and nationality. This course will examine how photographers have pushed the boundaries of feminism throughout history and within contemporary photography. We will explore the work of photographers who have various techniques and approaches to speak to the interpretation of feminism alongside supplemental readings to both inspire the creation of new work and fuel weekly discussions. Throughout the quarter students can expect to create three mini projects that relate to their perception of feminism in photography.
