What is a portrait? What can we learn from gazing at a photographic representation of another person? What remains hidden? How do the power dynamics at play in the process of making a portrait influence our role as viewers? In this course students will explore these complicated questions while engaging with the work of contemporary artists who utilize and subvert traditions of photographic portraiture. Through weekly readings, course presentations, class assignments, and group discussions, students will create new personal work that builds upon their own expanded understanding of portraiture in photography.

  • Students must have proficient working knowledge of foundational camera operations and photographic concepts, such as is covered in our Photography I classes.
  • Students should expect to spend a several hours per week on assignments for this course, which may require use of PCNW facilities; view our Rental Rates for details about additional fees.
  • Additional information about course expectations and required materials will be provided by the instructor at the start of the quarter.
