Over the course of the workshop, students will be introduced to current commercial and editorial styles and in the process, begin to develop their own perspective on photographing the built environment. On day one, following a brief history of architectural photography, we will cover the fundamentals of camera and lens equipment for architecture work as well as basic digital editing methodology. From here, we will move off-site to spend the rest of our session practicing our technique photographing a nearby, architecturally relevant building. Day two will begin with a group critique of images made during our previous site visit, during which Lara will provide feedback and suggestions. We will wrap up the day with a slide show of some of Lara's favorite types of projects to photograph.

During this workshop you can expect to gain:

Confidence with proper equipment choice for architectural photography

A basic understanding of digital editing workflow

A sharper eye for architectural photography

Images © Lara Swimmer

FACULTY

Maryam Dehbozorgi

DATE / TIME

February 20, 2027 | Saturday 12:30-5:30pm

TUITION

$145

Payment & Refund Policy
Scholarship Opportunities

FORMAT

In-person, enrollment is limited to 12 students.

LEVEL

Foundation

PREREQS

None; recommended Digital Photography Basics or equivalent experience

Capturing digital photographs is important, but knowing what to do with them next is key. Though the ultimate goal is to produce several perfect “final prints”, participants are encouraged to bring a variety of negatives to work from, ranging in size between 35mm and 4X5. Along with negatives, students are required to bring one clean rag and/or a clean fabric apron. Students are encouraged to bring any dodging or burning tools, however there will be opportunities to make tools during the workshop. Students are expected to have an understanding of the basic functions of a photo enlarger and some experience printing in a darkroom.

Topics covered include:

Visualizing and achieving a “final print” from a negative

Exploring advanced printing techniques, such as split filter printing

Localized exposure and contrast control through dodging and burning

Print evaluation techniques

Print registration

Darkroom workflow

Printing in a community darkroom, and much more!

NOTES

Students must bring black and white negatives that are processed and ready for printing, and a box or folder to take home completed prints

PCNW will provide 8x10 size fiber black and white paper for darkroom printing during the workshop

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0092/5312/files/Nelson_Jake_BW_Fiber_Printing_Workshop_Image.jpg?v=1728951606
portrait-photography-story-mood-light
Portrait Photography: Story + Mood + Light - Winter 2027

FACULTY

Kate Hailey

DATE / TIME

February 6, 2027 | Saturday 12:30-5:30pm

TUITION

$160

Payment & Refund Policy
Scholarship Opportunities

FORMAT

In-person, enrollment is limited to 12 students.

LEVEL

Intermediate

PREREQS

Photography I or equivalent proficient working knowledge of camera operations and photographic processes

Join photographer and educator Kate Hailey for an immersive one-day workshop exploring the art and craft of portrait photography.
