LEVEL Foundation

Join Ben Alper and Ross Mantle, founders of Sleeper Studio publishing, to explore a variety of approaches to editing and sequencing a group of photographs. Similar to written or spoken language, the meaning conveyed by a series of images is largely dependent on how they are combined. Shifts in meaning occur easily when photographs are carefully arranged to speak to one another in different ways, so we will use the idea of syntax as a jumping off point for understanding these fluctuations.

We will address a range of different sequencing strategies - considering narrative, poetic, and formal approaches. We will also discuss how to approach this task in relation to distinct presentational modes; the needs of a book sequence will likely be very different from those of an exhibition layout.

Over the course of a few days, our time together will consist of both individual and group exercises, followed by informal discussions where we examine the results of these different experiments. Participants are encouraged to bring a body of their own photographs (ideally printed at 4 x 6” or larger), but this is not mandatory. We will have groupings of photographs that will be available to use for those that don’t have their own images.

Sleeper is a publishing project working with photography, design, and text to realize artists’ ideas in printed form. While books will always be a core part of our output, we identify more as a studio than strictly as a publisher. The main distinction between the two is that as a studio we can cultivate a fluid and experimental practice that is more concerned with bringing certain ideas to life than it is about producing a particular kind of object. Sleeper is Ben Alper and Ross Mantle and operates out of Carrboro, NC and Pittsburgh, PA.

Ben Alper is an artist, photographer and publisher based in Carrboro, North Carolina. He received a BFA in Photography from Mass Art in Boston and an MFA in Studio Art from UNC - Chapel Hill. Ben is 1⁄2 of Sleeper Studio, as well as the co-founder of A New Nothing, an online project dedicated to hosting visual conversations between artists.

Ross Mantle lives and works in his native Pittsburgh, PA. He divides his time between self-initiated projects, client commissions, publishing with Sleeper Studio, and teaching at Carnegie Mellon University.
