CREDITS 3 – Fulfills Professional Practices (formerly Business) requirement for Certificate Program

In this course, we will cover a wide range of topics that are geared towards helping you build the skills and knowledge to run your own photography business, with an emphasis on the commercial and editorial realm. We will cover various stages of getting your business into full swing, outlining the fundamentals of business planning: research, evaluation, strategy and implementation. This course also covers specific details such as copyright law, licensing, estimating and invoicing, and marketing basics. Students will gain clearly defined objectives for their businesses and strategies to aid their business development, career path and success in the photographic industry. This will be accomplished by using a combination of lecture, guest presentation, research and business-planning projects.

Survey elements of the business of photography with a commercial focus, including:

  • Copyright law
  • Licensing
  • Paperwork
  • Estimating and Invoicing
  • Marketing Basics

Students will complete the class with:

  • Basic understanding of issues facing a start-up photography business
  • Working knowledge of several photography business models
  • A "business blueprint" outlining the steps needed to establish your business
