Still life images are poetic visual stories that are orchestrated through careful choices of props, light and composition. They can draw us, as photographers, into a world of our own making through our memories, ideas and our unique storytelling. Still life images can range in influence from Old Master paintings to the modernist world of Scandinavian design. Every creator has a unique series of stories to explore. This workshop will get you started. We will spend time reviewing some still life images of master photographers, painters and sculptors. We will talk about using window light and enhancing it with bits of other kinds of light including (but not limited to), continuous tungsten and LED lights, mirrors, flashlights, fill cards, gels, and more. Students are asked to bring a camera with a medium focal-length lens, a tripod, and a box of objects that you think you might like to use (books, flowers, old letters, etc., more about this when you sign up). Spend an afternoon delving into your own visual poetry via the still life image.
