PREREQS Introduction to Analog Color Printing or prior experience printing in analog color darkroom

This workshop will be focused on helping students level up their skills working with analog color films printing in the traditional darkroom. The workshop will meet across two sessions.

The first meeting will be lecture-based covering subjects such as the advantages of shooting with professional grade color films, how printing color negatives in the darkroom differs from scanning, basic color theory, and introducing photo based artists using color in their practices. The workshop will then break for three weeks to allow students to independently shoot 2-3 rolls of film on their own using Kodak pro films (Kodak Portra, Ektar) and consumer film (Kodak Gold).

The workshop will then meet for a second weekend session for two full days of instructor-lead darkroom printing using Saunders enlargers and Colex color processor to review shot film stocks when printed with an enlarger.

    MATERIALS

    • 35mm or Medium format film will be provided by PCNW to each student, including development (details to be shared during first session)
    • Large format color 4x5 shooting is possible but students will have to arrange their own film purchase and development.
    • Students should plan to purchase their own box of C printing paper ahead of the printing session (8x10 Fuji Crystal Archive matte, lustre or glossy, 100 sheets)

Prerequisites: completion of Intro to Analog Color Printing workshop or prior experience printing in an analog color darkroom.
