Performing for the Camera: An Exploration of the Self-Portrait introduces students to the history of the self-portrait and methods of visual storytelling through regular photographic exercises that promote self-expression. Throughout the quarter, students will be encouraged to investigate the self through a series of photographic exercises that center the body through gestures, clothing, props, and the environment. Each photographic prompt calls for a willingness to explore personal experiences in the world and will culminate in biweekly discussions of work. In addition to photographic exercises, students will be provided with readings that concentrate on various techniques of performance artists, topics around representation and body language, leading up to inquiries around what informs our notion of self. At the end of this course, students will leave with a better understanding of self-representation, increased comfort with being in front of the lens, and how the camera can be a tool for processing a wide spectrum of emotions and experiences.
Prior and proficient experience using a DSLR camera (or equivalent, such as a mirrorless camera) or an analog film camera, and basic knowledge of photo development (Lightroom, Photoshop, and/or analog processing), as taught in the prerequisite Photography I courses, is necessary for this course.
